METALLICA: 'Monster' Documentary To Receive Theatrical Release In May

December 5, 2003

METALLICA's much-anticipated documentary, "Metallica: Some Kind of Monster" — an unusual look at the heavy metal band undergoing group therapy to help its members through addiction, fatherhood and "near-total disintegration" while recording their first original studio album in six years — won't be ready for theatrical release until May, according to MTV.com.

Despite the later-than-originally-expected release date, the band's management and the filmmakers hope to be able to piggyback the movie with METALLICA's forthcoming North American tour. "We're going to figure out a way to roll out the film from city to city with the tour," director Joe Berlinger said. "It's probably not going to be in every city on the tour, but we will be able to hit a lot of the dates."

"Metallica: Some Kind of Monster" will also play in art houses across North America. "The film serves two very distinct audiences," Berlinger explained. "One is obviously the hardcore METALLICA fanbase. The other is anyone who goes for independent documentary films like [our 1992 movie] 'Brother's Keeper'. "

The movie has been accepted at the 2004 Sundance Film Festival, which begins January 15 in Park City, Utah.
